The Making of the Nursery.

We’ve been slowly getting the nursery together and if it weren’t for my inability to make a decision and stick with it, we would probably have it finished by now.

Initially, we were going to convert the computer room into the nursery and move the computer desk into the spare room and have just a bassinet in our bedroom, but then it felt like we had a bit of the nursery spread out throughout our already small house. Since the bassinet in our bedroom was nonnegotiable, at least until the baby gets here and we figure out some sort of routine that we can all live by without wanting to kill each other, we decided against assigning an entire room for a nursery and instead dedicated an entire corner of our bedroom just for the baby.

The nursery corner in its current state:
Nursery: In Progress.

The baby’s bed came a couple of months ago and I am totally in love with it. At first I was concerned it was too big, but once we got it off the floor and placed on top of a former coffee table that we have had for years, it became less of a glorified cat bed and more of a posh moses basket. And then Isis claimed it as her own and it reverted right back to a glorified cat bed. On a table.

Uhoh.

I’m the baby.

In the last couple of months, we have been to Ikea no less than 3 times to pick up various items for the nursery and the rest of the house including a bed frame and a dresser. Our bed frame broke a while back (prepregnancy, THANKYOUVERYMUCH!) and our mattresses have been on the floor ever since. We wanted something with modern, clean lines but also something that wasn’t going to cost an arm and a leg. I wanted this, but not at the risk of having to go back early from maternity leave because we splurged on a bed frame. Instead we settled on the Malm from Ikea, and although we both seem to injure ourselves daily on the sharp (clean) edges of the frame, I love the way it looks in the room. Especially considering how relatively little that it cost.

I also wanted a new dresser that could double as a changing table. Again, I wanted this, but our wallets insisted on the Hemnes dresser in white from Ikea. To transform the dresser into a changing table, I picked up this diaper caddy the other weekend when we were in Wenatchee and a changing pad will go next to it on the other side. This evening we hung a shelf above the dresser that will eventually hold decorations and other various knickknacks. Right now, I’d like to put a large white cardboard letter of Baby’s first initial (assuming this kid will ever have a name) and some dark brown frames on the other side; but, I will probably change my mind before tomorrow morning. Above Baby’s bed, I’m going to hang some wire that we can clip various prints and photographs from, and between the bed and the dresser there is a sheep’s skin rug on the floor.

And that’s really it. We have no idea what to expect and how exactly this baby is going to fit into our lives but just seeing how its space is already developing within our home is making us even that more excited to meet him or her. Hopefully, he or she won’t mind sharing a bed.

  • Oh, I’m not giving up on the Room and Board bed and dresser set — they’re just on hold for a (long) while.

  • I hear that!!! Have you ever gotten anything from Ikea that didn’t last very long….? Do they have different quality stuff? We’ve never? got anything from there or even been in a store for very long. Mom

  • Poor Cletus…fighting for his little space already. Isis looks like she’s not going to give in so I hope wee lil Oren (aka lil Pine Tree) knows some karate moves coming out of the womb. :)

  • @mommie: Yeah, some Ikea stuff is total crap. Mostly it’s the stuff made of particleboard/laminate and their fabrics. I find that it’s best to go into the store and touch everything you are considering buying. If it can hold up to being on public display then it will be fine in a private home. Up until we bought the bed and dresser we have only bought solid wood furniture, and have been very satisfied. I’ll keep you posted on how they hold up!
